Sydney is set to witness a grand artistic spectacle this November, as the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) prepares to host exhibitions of works by two of the world's most renowned artists - Louise Bourgeois and Vasily Kandinsky. These exhibitions are part of the esteemed Sydney International Art Series.
Louise Bourgeois: A Deep Dive into the Artist's World
Titled "Louise Bourgeois: Has the Day Invaded the Night or Has the Night Invaded the Day?", this exhibition is one of the most extensive ever dedicated to a woman artist in Australia. It promises to be a monumental presentation, being the first monographic exhibition in the Art Gallery's new building. Born in Paris in 1911 and having passed away in New York in 2010, Bourgeois stands as one of the most influential artists of the past century. The exhibition, spanning seven decades and showcasing over 150 of her works, will be the largest survey of Bourgeois ever presented in Australia. Art enthusiasts can immerse themselves in this unparalleled presentation from 25 November 2023 to 28 April 2024.
Kandinsky: A Journey through Abstract Art
The Kandinsky exhibition, curated in collaboration with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, will delve deep into the life and work of Vasily Kandinsky. Set to be displayed in the original South Building of the AGNSW from 4 November 2023 to 10 March 2024, this exhibition was first showcased as "Vasily Kandinsky: Around the Circle" at the Guggenheim Museum New York in 2021-22. Drawing from the rich holdings of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, the exhibition offers an in-depth look into the work of one of the most experimental, influential, and beloved European modernists. Born in Moscow in 1866 and having passed away in Paris in 1944, Kandinsky is celebrated as a pioneer of abstract art and a groundbreaking theorist.
Both exhibitions, "Louise Bourgeois: Has the Day Invaded the Night or Has the Night Invaded the Day?" and "Kandinsky", are presented as part of the Sydney International Art Series. This series, initiated in 2010 by the NSW Government's tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, aims to bring the world's most outstanding artists to Sydney. The Kandinsky exhibition, in particular, is proudly supported by the NSW Government through the Create NSW Blockbusters Funding initiative.
