Liliana Pasalic Croatian, b. 1979

Liliana Pasalic is an artist currently based in Adelaide, Australia, where she both resides and practices her art.

With a foundation and formal education in design (MA industrial design, Design Studies, Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb, Croatia, Europe), and a professional background encompassing industrial design, interior design, and stage design, her journey in visual art and painting has been a blend of formal instruction and self-guided exploration.

Her present artistic practice centers primarily on painting and sculpture, often drawing inspiration from design recollections and blurring the boundaries between these interconnected disciplines. Rooted in a personal narrative spanning Croatia/Zagreb, UK/London, and her current residence in Australia/Adelaide, her art contemplates art history, identity, the unconscious, colonialism, environmentalism, and the pursuit of happiness within the context of contemporary Western society.

Occupying a space that hovers between abstraction and figuration, Pasalic's artwork delves into themes of female roles, domesticity, stereotypical images of suburban Australia and urban Croatia, intertwined with glimpses of South London and the London art scene. A distinctive aspect of her artistic curiosity is centered on "cheap" popular images that are infused with her unique perspective, both as a creator and an observer of art.

Her creative journey has been showcased through numerous group and solo exhibitions, gracing cities such as New York, Jerusalem, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Paris, Brussels, Vienna, Milan, Helsinki, Melbourne, and Adelaide. Notably, her work has been featured in the book "Croatian design now" by Professor and design critic Fedja Vukic. Pasalic was chosen to represent Croatia in the EDIDA "Young designer of the year" exhibition during Milan Design Week, curated and designed by architect Giulio Capellini of Capellini Ltd. Her creations have also been part of impactful exhibitions, such as "Croatian designer's impact" in Milan Design Week, the Re-actor exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art Zagreb, biennial exhibitions of Croatian design at the "Arts and Crafts Museum Zagreb," "Dan D" exhibitions, and the traveling European exhibition of Croatian design titled "In a Nutshell," spanning nine years and various capitals. Her work has gained recognition in prominent platforms like Designboom, Vogue Italia's style.it, Elle Decor magazine, Grazia, and In Design magazine.
